What a great dive this morning. 10 sharks in total! Including a group of 4 and a group of 3.
This isn’t just a one off event. Since November 2007, shark sightings have been on the increase, and they just keep getting better and better. January and February used to be low season for the sharks, but not any more…
In February 2008, TSD spearheaded a campaign to introduce a dive schedule for Monad Shoal. The shark dive is an early morning dive, and most of the dive boats would go at the same time. This meant the dive site would be full of divers. So the dive shops agreed that they would go at different times every day. We now have a rotating schedule and the divers are staggered throughout the early morning. After we implemented the schedule we worked with the other dive shops to implement a “Diving Etiquette” for Monad.
These procedures were all put into place to minimize diver impact on Monad. If the increase in shark sightings is anything to go by, it is certainly working.
