Every morning before sunrise, our boats head out to Kimud Shoal. Most mornings, the thresher sharks show up. We’ve been doing this for years, and it still hasn’t got boring. But beyond the jaw-drop moment of seeing a four-metre shark with a tail as long as its body, there’s a fascinating story about what these animals are actually doing here and what science has revealed about them.

Why Kimud Shoal?

Kimud Shoal is a submerged island about 8 kilometres off Malapascua’s coast. Its flat top sits at around 18-25 metres depth, and it drops off into deep water on all sides. This underwater plateau functions as a cleaning station — the sharks come here at dawn to be groomed by small wrasse and cleaner fish that pick parasites from their skin and gills.

This cleaning station behaviour is what makes Malapascua unique in the world. Thresher sharks exist across the globe’s tropical and temperate oceans, but nowhere else do they visit a shallow cleaning station with this kind of predictability. Researchers believe the combination of depth, current patterns, and the established cleaner fish population creates conditions that the sharks have learned to rely on, possibly over generations.

The Species: Pelagic Thresher Shark

The threshers at Kimud Shoal are pelagic thresher sharks (Alopias pelagicus), the smallest of the three thresher species. “Smallest” is relative — adults typically reach 3 to 4 metres in total length, with that extraordinary tail making up roughly half their body length. They have enormous eyes adapted for hunting in deep, dark water, and a streamlined body built for speed.

That tail isn’t just decorative. Research has documented thresher sharks using their tails like whips to stun schooling fish. High-speed camera footage shows them accelerating toward a bait ball, then flicking the tail over their head at speeds that create shockwaves in the water. Stunned fish float helplessly, and the shark circles back to feed. It’s one of the most remarkable hunting techniques in the ocean.

What Research Has Revealed

Studies at Kimud Shoal have given scientists insights they couldn’t get elsewhere. Photo-identification projects have tracked individual sharks returning to the cleaning station over multiple years, suggesting strong site fidelity. Acoustic tagging data shows the sharks spend their nights in deep water — sometimes below 200 metres — then ascend to the shoal at dawn.

The cleaning behaviour itself has been documented in detail. Sharks slow to near-hovering speed over the cleaning station, extending their gills and holding positions that allow the tiny wrasse to work. Some individuals have been observed returning to the same cleaning spot on the shoal repeatedly, suggesting they have preferred locations within the site.

Population estimates for Kimud Shoal are encouraging but not without concern. The site appears to host a resident population, but pelagic threshers are listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List due to fishing pressure across their range. The sharks at Malapascua benefit from the marine protected area status of Kimud Shoal, but they spend most of their time in open ocean where protections are harder to enforce.

What Our Divers See

The typical encounter goes like this: you descend to the plateau at Kimud Shoal in the pre-dawn grey. Your guide positions the group along the edge of the cleaning station. You wait. Sometimes a few minutes, sometimes longer. Then a shape materialises from the blue — an impossibly long tail trailing behind a sleek silver body. The shark glides onto the cleaning station, slows, and hovers while tiny fish dart around its gills.

On a good morning, you might see three or four individuals. On exceptional mornings, we’ve had groups of eight or more. The sharks are not aggressive toward divers, but they are shy. Good buoyancy, calm breathing, and staying low to the reef are essential. The divers who see the best encounters are the ones who master the art of being still.

Conservation and Our Role

Thresher Shark Divers takes the health of Kimud Shoal seriously. We follow strict diver-to-shark ratios, maintain distance protocols, and work with the local marine protected area management to ensure dive operations don’t impact the cleaning station. We’ve supported research efforts with logistics, dive support, and data collection over the years.

The economic argument for shark conservation is powerful here. A single thresher shark at Kimud Shoal generates more tourism revenue alive over its lifetime than it ever could as a catch. The local community understands this, and the marine protected area has strong grassroots support.
